ROCK COUNTY — The Rock County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a new phone scam involving impersonators posing as deputies.
According to authorities, scammers call individuals claiming they missed a court date or have an outstanding warrant. They pressure victims to pay immediately — often asking for payment via gift cards — to avoid arrest.
To make the calls seem legitimate, scammers are reportedly using the names of real deputies and supervisors and even leaving fake voicemails that mimic official sheriff’s office messages. Law enforcement emphasizes that no legitimate agency will ever request payment over the phone or via gift card.
While no confirmed financial losses have been reported yet, officials are urging residents to remain vigilant. Anyone receiving such calls should:
Hang up immediately
Do not provide personal information
Report the incident to the Rock County Communications Center at 608-757-2244
Sheriff’s deputies remind the community that scams like this often increase during the fall and holiday seasons, when scammers exploit fear and urgency to trick people. They encourage neighbors to share warnings with family members and older adults, who are often targeted.
Stay aware of unusual calls, double-check any requests for money or personal information, and always verify through official channels before taking action.
